What We Are Looking For
Students should be ambitious self-starters with a strong desire to become investigative reporters. Preferred skills include some experience in the following areas: identifying and developing story ideas, reporting and writing news stories, experience or interest in using online databases and spreadsheets for reporting and experience collaborating on stories.
What We Are Offering
The intern will be teamed up with reporters for 10 weeks working on major investigative projects, which will immerse them in every facet of The Post’s most ambitious journalism beginning on June 6. In the past, students and fellows embedded in the Investigative Unit have worked on stories about the Opioid crisis and the unscrupulous actions of drugs companies and distributors. They have helped create original datasets to track rioters arrested at the Capitol riots, identified people arrested during nationwide protests over police violence and determined what happened in those cases, and helped report out stories about the use of fatal force by police. Reporters on the Investigative Unit have years of experience working closely with students from the nation’s top journalism programs and take their roles as mentors and teachers seriously. In the past, students and fellows have earned bylines and credit lines on hundreds of stories, including Pulitzer Prize-winning work.
The intern will work alongside reporters and editors on The Post’s Investigative Unit on the paper’s most ambitious investigative projects. The intern will help reporters develop investigative stories, gather data and documents through records requests, build databases, analyze information and conduct other reporting. The intern will attend investigative editorial meetings and be encouraged to develop lines of reporting and story ideas.
