The Los Angeles Times is a 140-year-old newspaper that is transforming itself into a digital media outlet for the 21st Century, providing readers with a California-centric news perspective on multiple platforms. Investigative and accountability reporting is a priority for the newsroom, which has won numerous awards in recent years, including the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting for exposing sexual abuse by a longtime USC campus gynecologist. Other work by our investigative team has shone a light on state failures to properly oversee negligent doctors; aggressive policing targeting cyclists that disproportionately impacted Latinos; abuse and fraud in California’s industry that cares for the dying; the rise of right-wing extremism; deadly delays in providing poor patients in L.A. County with specialist medical care; and the false claims of Native American ancestry made by numerous white business owners so they could qualify for federal minority contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate would be a college student or recent graduate who is collaborative, curious, has sharp critical thinking skills and is empathetic. We would preferably like the candidate to have language skills (preferably Spanish), data analysis skills, and previous journalism experience.
What Are We Offering
We are offering a 10-week, hands-on internship that will involve working closely with award-winning veteran investigative journalists on a variety of different accountability stories. Starting June 1, the intern will report to the two editors who run a team of eight investigative reporters and likely help out on projects underway within the team. They will be exposed to mentoring by other reporters and training in various investigative techniques, from data analysis to requesting and mining public records and other documents. The team is highly collaborative and reporters and interns alike are expected to help other sections of the paper on major breaking news stories.
