The Ida B. Wells Society has hired its first program intern. Taylin Cain, a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill began with the Society in October. She will be working closely with the program coordinator and director on daily operations of the Society from data management to marketing efforts. Learn more about Taylin below with her Q&A.
Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Taylin Cain, I am a junior majoring in Media and Journalism. I was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. I just recently transferred from Elon University, and this is my first semester at UNC. I am currently an active member of the Black Student Movement and was an active member of Elon’s Black Student Union as well.
What made you interested in the program intern position with the Ida B. Wells Society?
I became interested in the program intern position with the Ida B. Wells Society when Christine Lee, the program coordinator, came to one of my classes. She explained what the Ida B. Wells Society stood for, and it really resonated with me. The primary goal of recruiting aspiring journalists of color aligned with not only who I am but my passion for seeking to uplift voices of color as well.
What are you most looking forward to experiencing or learning in your new role?
I am beyond elated to be able to serve and learn from so many intelligent individuals and the Society as a whole. I look forward to hearing from educated leaders in the Ida B. Wells Society that have similar passions as I do. I believe that could help me expand not only my impact within my community, but my love for activism and journalism as well. In addition, being able to observe and participate in such a renowned non-profit organization geared toward people of color, will contribute to my preparation and navigation of the real world.
What are your career goals after graduation?
My career goals are somewhat broad given that I would like to continue to explore the multiple dynamic facets of media and journalism. However, whatever path I take, I want to be able to make an impact in seeking justice and conveying true accurate information to people and for the people.
Tell us about some of your hobbies and interests!
My hobbies and interests consist of spending time with friends and family. If I am not doing that, I like to keep up with fashion trends and social media.
