FAQs

Are fellows expected to cover their own travel and lodging on the fellowship?

No, the Society will cover travel to and from the fellowship, as well as lodging and meals.

Is this fellowship only for emerging journalists with 3-5 years of experience?

No, our 3-5 year experience requirement is the baseline. For students and recent graduates, please consider applying to our fellowship. For those with more experience in journalism, but haven’t had a chance to dive into investigative reporting, this is for you, too!

Will draft applications be considered?

No, only completed applications will be considered. Applicants are able to save their work as a draft to complete later, but they must be submitted by our deadline, which is January 3, 2026 at 11:59 ET. To ensure your application is considered, it is highly encouraged to submit days before this deadline.

As a freelancer, how do I go about securing a news organization’s partnership?

We suggest pitching your story idea related to this fellowship, like you would any other story pitch. Then share more information about the fellowship from our site, and reflect on our tips to get the green light mentioned in the above deck. Consider publications that cover stories similar to your pitch that may be missing something that yours will uncover.

Is there a timeline for project completion?

Our goal is to ensure your project can be published before the end of the calendar year. We strive to provide participants with time and resources to ensure their projects are progressing while in Atlanta, so when fellows return to their newsrooms they are adding final touches before publishing.

How many fellows are selected?

We select around 10 journalists to participate in our fellowship.

Have more questions?

We’ve got answers! Please reach out to our program manager, Arlette Hawkins if you have questions regarding the fellowship.
