The Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting and the Center for Journalism & Democracy are thrilled to announce the return of the Data Institute, a free two-week intensive, hands-on workshop on using data, design and code for journalism. This year’s program will take place July 7-18 in Atlanta, GA.
The Data Institute welcomes a small cohort of reporters at various stages of their careers — students, journalism educators, and working journalists — who are passionate about learning to tell stories with data.
In order to apply, you must be a member of the Ida B. Wells Society (it’s free to join). All participants must be able to commit to the full-time, two-week schedule. We also offer stipends to all participants to compensate for time away from work and other costs.
Applications for the Data Institute are due by April 25.
About the program:
The Data Institute is a free, two-week hands-on workshop on using data, design and code for journalism. The program welcomes a small cohort of journalists at various stages of their careers — students, journalism educators, and working journalists — who are passionate about learning to tell stories with data. No previous data experience is required, but we want to see that you’ve demonstrated curiosity about telling stories with data. Have you tinkered with data, design or code? Tell us about it in the application.
If you’ve ever felt intimidated by learning to code and doing math, don’t count yourself out, because we’ve all been there. Most of the teachers you’ll have at the Data Institute majored in the humanities, such as journalism, English, history or philosophy.
Did we mention that it’s free?
The Data Institute is completely free to attend. We will cover roundtrip travel costs to Atlanta and provide lodging, lunch and snacks every day of the Institute.
In addition, every participant will receive a $1,000 stipend to supplement other needs or replace lost income while participating in the program.
