Internship Application Tips and Information

October 2, 2025

Missed our internship info session? Need a refresher on the tips shared by our trainer Marissa Evans? You’ve come to the right place. Watch the recording of our internship information session where we break down our application process, articulate the unique benefits and experiences of our program, and help alleviate those application jitters.

About the Application

Our 2025 internship application will go live in October. Please ensure you are a member of the Society to receive updates on its official launch date. Membership is also a requirement of the application process. Society membership is free.

Our internship is open to rising juniors through recent graduates who are no more than three years out of school. Students are required to provide work samples, two letters of recommendation, and a resume within their application.

We encourage students to review/revise any samples they intend to submit to our application.

The application process will include three phases:

  1. Initial application – Students will complete the general internship application.
  2. Internship preference selection – Students will be able to select their internship site preferences. An interview may be included in this step.
  3. Finalist announcement – Selected students will be notified of their internship offer.

Students will be informed throughout the phases on where their application stands. Due to the volume of applications, we will not be able to share why students were not selected for the internship.

About the Internship

The Ida B. Wells Society Investigative Reporting Internship is the only investigative reporting internship in the country for students. Interns kick-off the summer with our internship bootcamp to meet their cohort and acquire skills to confidently start their summer.

Internships take place at some of the top news organizations in the country, providing interns a summer filled with learning from award-winning journalists.

Our partner newsrooms represent each region of the United States. Students who are assigned a placement outside of their current residence receive a travel stipend and housing assistance.
